About

My name is Anouska.

The Anouska Archives is a lifestyle and travel blog. I write about moving through cities, everyday routines, and the small observations that tend to get overlooked. Some posts are about travel, like planes, walking, and being somewhere new. Others are about daily life, feeling behind, slowing down, and paying attention to the little things.

This isn’t a guide or a space for advice. It’s a collection of notes, habits, and moments that feel worth keeping! If you like personal essays, travel without performance, and writing that leaves things open-ended, you’ll probably enjoy reading this.

My Academic Background

I am a postgraduate who has just completed a master’s degree in international security after my undergraduate studies in history. My academic journey has been shaped by a strong interest in global politics and historical contexts that influence international relations.

Studying history at an undergraduate level allowed me to develop critical analytical skills, particularly in understanding long-term political, social, and economic trends. My undergraduate dissertation involved extensive research using both primary and secondary sources, which strengthened my ability to engage with complex historical narratives and evaluate evidence-based arguments. I found this particularly engaging and fulfilling to complete, and it has certainly shaped how I write and how I view the world around me.

Transitioning into international security for my master’s was a natural step, as I wanted to explore contemporary security issues through both theoretical and practical lenses. I also actively enjoy writing policy briefs, and it seemed only right that I continued my studies. My coursework has covered key areas such as terrorism, intelligence, urban warfare, and the ethics of warfare itself. I am particularly interested in this ethical dimension of war, the security of civilians in conflict zones, and the evolving nature of modern warfare, especially in urban environments.

I completed a master’s dissertation on space and militarisation, looking at how private companies are reshaping state power beyond Earth. I achieved a 77% on it with excellent feedback, and it was a passion project that I truly enjoyed writing and researching. Research comes easily to me, hence why I excelled in my MA with a distinction. While this blog isn’t academic, that work influences how I think about distance, politics, and research, and why I’m drawn to writing a blog!

Beyond my academic studies, though, I have been actively involved in university life. I would always recommend keeping a healthy work-life balance when studying long-term, as burnout is common in postgraduate students, and it's necessary to have a break!

I am a course representative, which has allowed me to engage with faculty and fellow students to discuss academic improvements and represent my peers’ interests. This role has strengthened my ability to communicate, advocate for others, and understand the inner workings of academic institutions. I also find this useful towards any career opportunities I may have, as it has pushed me to be more confident in my own thoughts and abilities and not just second-guessing myself consistently.

During my final year of undergraduate study, I joined the lacrosse society, which provided a great balance to my academic commitments. Being part of a sports society allowed me to develop teamwork skills and experience a new challenge outside of my academic focus. It was a refreshing way to push myself physically while balancing my studies!

Now, however, I simply go to Pilates in the week, where and when I can! I enjoy reformer Pilates a lot, but I find it a struggle to motivate myself sometimes due to exhaustion from the course, something that I am trying to combat.

Looking ahead, I am interested in a career that intersects security, journalism and publishing. My passion for security studies aligns with roles in research institutions, think tanks, international organisations, and government agencies. All of these interest me, and I'm keen to find work in one of these. At the same time, I have an avid interest in journalism and publishing, particularly in areas related to lifestyle and travel.

Whether I pursue a career in policy, international research, or journalism, I aim to contribute meaningful discussions to the field of international affairs while also continuing to explore and write about my experiences abroad.
