New York City, known as the city that never sleeps, lives up to its name. If you are visiting for the first time, planning your itinerary can feel overwhelming! I know it did for me – but I was lucky to have a super organised sister with an Excel spreadsheet! However, now that I've experienced this myself, with my well-structured plan, you can discover the best that the Big Apple offers!
This 5-day itinerary will guide you through every tourist checkpoint, which may sound basic, but it has to be done on the first visit to the city!
Day 1: Arrival and Times Square
Make sure you book your flights well in advance. We booked our flight with British Airways to JFK from London Gatwick. Our flight was simple, and we were well looked after! I watched two movies on board, did my skincare, and tried to sleep a bit so that I wasn't entirely jetlagged when I arrived! We landed around 6pm at JFK and queued for a while to get through security and visa checks, grabbed our luggage, and then hopped on the subway to our hotel!

We had heard things about the subway in New York, and we certainly experienced a few odd things, but it was no worse than that of London's! Granted, the threats are certainly larger in America, but providing you're in a group and you are sensible, it's as safe as walking the streets of New York in daytime.
Our hotel was the Hilton Garden Inn New York Times Square! It fit three of us comfortably and was in a prime location for walking to Times Square, getting the subway, and even walking to Radio City! Our first stop was Times Square! The bright lights and the absolutely insane crowd created a feeling I won't forget. The flashing billboards were blinding, and I can understand the hype around visiting. Yes – it is just a bunch of bright ads and a busy crowd – but it's so interesting and unlike anywhere else I've been before!

For dinner, I recommend trying Raising Cane’s for an enjoyable and cheap meal. I've always heard great things about their chicken and the sauce it comes with, and I had been desperate to try this following all the TikToks I'd seen about it! It is certainly busy in there, but it suited us for an evening meal after a ten-hour flight.
After dinner, take time to wander the nearby streets. Times Square is alive with energy, featuring street performers and pop-up shops, but don't get scammed into photographs. We just took our own photos and avoided the street performers since we knew we'd end up being overcharged, and we weren't keen on the photo opportunities either.
We tried to stay up late so that the tiredness wouldn't impact us too much but ended up going to bed around 11pm! I'd recommend doing this so you can wake up refreshed and early the next morning.
Day 2: Breakfast and Iconic Landmarks

Start your day with breakfast at Ellen’s Stardust Diner. Arriving right at opening time is essential, especially since we hadn't made a reservation! We were seated at a cosy booth on the balcony, which meant we didn't have the best view, but it was still amazing to witness the live singing! We even got to sing along to a chorus with them! The staff were lovely, and the food was great, and it was such a fun experience, unlike any other!
Next, make your way to the Empire State Building. While we did not venture up to the observation deck, the surrounding area offers shops and sights worth exploring. Don't forget to stop by the nearby Macy’s, one of the largest department stores in the world, where you can find almost anything you need. This was probably my favourite store there (obviously!). There's a sort of 'secret' clearance floor, where most items are typically discounted 50% or more, and this is where we spent most of our time.

We had also gone at a time for Christmas sales, meaning the shopping was 'successful', and I probably spent a few hundred pounds in there!
Following the shopping spree, head to Chelsea Market. This indoor food hall is a haven for food lovers, featuring everything from artisanal cheeses to gourmet tacos. Plan to indulge in some delicious bites here! We had pizza, but that was because we were just ravenous following such a busy morning and needed something easy and relatively affordable. It is busy and lacks seating areas, and since it had been raining all day, we struggled to find anywhere else to eat, so just beware of that!

Afterward, take a leisurely stroll along the High Line, an elevated park that offers stunning views of the Hudson River and city buildings. We popped into a supermarket to grab some cold drinks to take with us, since we had walked all morning and were slowly getting tired out. A refreshment halfway through was well-deserved! Don’t miss the famous pigeon statue; it’s a popular photo opportunity! I also just thought this was cool as an idea, and despite the rain, it was still quite a feature! The walk itself is also filled with gorgeous views, and it's good to get more steps in despite already having trekked around the city.

The day continues with shopping at Saks Fifth Avenue. New York shoppers typically spend an average of $700-800 per trip, so don’t be surprised if you leave with a few new items. I certainly spent a similar amount, but I was so excited with what I bought, and I had budgeted for a lot of spending in NYC!
For dinner, consider Chipotle if you haven’t eaten there already. We had never tried it before, and it was simple, quick, and yummy! It’s a solid choice for a quick meal after a long day of walking through the busy city. I would rate it a solid 7/10, a high rating considering I'm not usually a fan of fast food. It did the job!

Later on, book a Broadway show! We had booked to enjoy an 8pm Broadway performance of "Elf!" at the Marquis Theatre. This is one of our favourite Christmas movies, and to see it made into a musical was amazing! The music fit into the theme perfectly, and I had to listen to the songs once I'd returned home for Christmas! Our seats weren't overly expensive, and we had an amazing view. Plus, getting to dress up for the theatre is always a fun experience, particularly in a city like New York, where it seems like it is fashion week every week!
Day 3: Shopping (again) and Central Park
On your third day, start with breakfast at a local American café near your hotel. Fuel up because a day of shopping awaits! The nearest place to us was lovely and, again, cheap for NYC! We were trying to stick on a medium budget, so having a cheaper breakfast meant we could splash out on lunch and dinner!

The first stop from here is Grand Central Station. As a huge Gossip Girl fan, this was an iconic spot that was a must-visit! They have a small market here too at Christmas, which we enjoyed wandering around! We took some quick photos in the station. and took in how absolutely huge the station is!
Your next stop is FAO Schwarz, the iconic toy store, known for its giant piano and whimsical displays, especially at Christmas! This was the busiest store we visited and was highly overstimulating due to the absolute immense crowds going through the store. It wasn't a particularly enjoyable experience, and we left shortly after entering. Free People was directly opposite and we popped in here, before heading down 5th Avenue and spotting the Louis Vuitton flagship store! This was surreal, as I had seen so many TikToks about it and it truly lives up to the hype.

Then, take a quick stop at the Plaza Hotel, made famous by the movie "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York." This is my absolute favourite Christmas movie and it felt like I was reliving my childhood through this trip! We did have a peek inside and took a photo by the entrance Christmas tree, and had a look at the lovely lunch place inside. This looked amazing, but was fully-booked when we went! I would recommend planning ahead if you would like a breakfast at the Plaza, as it looked stunning!
Following this little stop, take on an adventure in Central Park. Covering 843 acres, it’s much bigger than you might expect and has a ton of different paths to take. As mentioned, we are Gossip Girl fans and tried to find some of the iconic bridges filmed in the show, meaning we had to take plenty of different paths and got lost a few times in the process. It's truly way bigger than you'd think, and we walked so much just to get to some of these places. There's a massive ice rink during the Christmas period, but we had booked the Rockerfeller centre already! I would definitely visit this one next time as it looked gorgeous and the view of the park was stunning.

Make sure to stop at the steps of The Met if you're going through the park. We walked here through Central Park and it took us maybe thirty minutes to get to the other side! This is an Instagram-worthy spot that is perfect for reliving Gossip Girl moments! Me and my sister were absolutely loving this spot and it's also just iconic in general. We then got an Uber back to 5th Avenue to avoid exhausting ourselves, and this was very easy to book on the app!
For lunch, stroll along 5th Avenue in the Upper East Side. Even if you're not shopping, there are so many interesting sights and it's just such an aesthetic in the city! As someone who loves the city girl lifestyle, this was like a dream come true! Yes - it's not perfect - but it's certainly different to someone living in a small town!
After some relaxation time back at the hotel (which I would definitely recommend!), enjoy dinner at the Bryant Park Christmas Market! The festive atmosphere is enchanting and the decorations are very pretty, with countless delicious food options to choose from! We tried to get food to share from each one so that we made the most of it, and the prices weren't too bad. Obviously these were more expensive than you'd like, but seeing as you're at a gorgeous Christmas market in the middle of New York, you can't expect much! One of our meals was a pasta cooked in a wheel of cheese - delicious!

To conclude your day, book in to experience the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall! Their holiday show is memorable and the excitement of the performance is not to be missed! I absolutely loved this show and was enthralled from the beginning. We were all exhausted though, which meant we didn't appreciate it as much as we should have, which was such a shame. I felt like my eyes were closing on and off half the time - which couldn't be helped despite the insane dancing and the lively music! I genuinely loved the show though and wish I could go back soon to experience it again.
Day 4: Exploring More of NYC
On your fourth day, go for breakfast bagels at Liberty's Bagels at 5th Avenue or Midtown! We went to the Midtown store and it was amazing! Plenty of seating and the bagels were so delicious. We, of course, had to get the famous rainbow bagel! Plus there were so many options to choose from when customising the bagels, it was an almost impossible decision. I loved the food and the price was relatively affordable, so definitely make sure to stop here before starting your day.

If you're at Midtown, it's a short tube ride to the Staten Island Ferry which takes you on a free ride across to the Empire Outlets. Be careful to not get scammed by people outside telling you that there is a fee for crossing! We were warned of this previously and ignored them, just head straight in and you'll be absolutely fine! Just check the timings before going to ensure you aren't waiting for too long. Head out onto the deck of the ferry for a view of the Statue of Liberty from afar! This saves you having to pay for a tour, as well as saving time on a short trip!
The Empire Outlets were incredible if you're into shopping. I found Uggs for $90 which was a bargain! There are a range of shops with all sorts of prices, and even a Christmas-themed shop which was adorable. I'd recommend staying for an hour or so before heading back on the ferry so as to not waste too much time! Grab lunch either over here in a fast food spot, or wait until you're back on the mainland for a proper meal in a local diner.

Next, we headed to the 9/11 memorial. This was an incredibly sobering experience and something that is incomparable to anything else I've seen. We did not do a tour or stop for too long, but it is an absolute must-do when visiting NYC. Once you leave here, consider going back to Bloomingdales or Macy's. Yes - this itinerary does include a lot of shopping, but the Christmas period here is insane! If you're not a fan of shopping, skip this and head to the Museum of Broadway which is a 25 minute tube ride. We didn't have time personally to do this, but I've heard great reviews and I was devastated we couldn't go! Tickets are affordable, and for a fan of Broadway/West End shows, this would have been an amazing experience.
Go back to your hotel to relax and get changed before the next big evening out! We made sure to allocate at least an hour back at the hotel every afternoon to ensure we didn't exhaust ourselves too much.
I would consider pre-booking a visit to Lillie’s Victorian Establishment for a festive bar/dinner experience after relaxing at your hotel. This is known for its stunning decorations and magical ambiance, getting a reservation ahead of time is wise since walk-in spots can be hard to find during the busy holiday season. We were unlucky and didn't manage to, so this was an absolute blow! We deeply regretted not booking in advance as the decorations are absolutely insane and it was just so magical to look at.

After this, go to the Rockerfeller Centre for ice skating! This is another must-do due to the popularity and aesthetics, as well as it being such a fun activity to do in NYC. It wasn't overly expensive, and we pre-booked which definitely made it cheaper! I love ice-skating, and there is plenty to do in the centre beforehand while you wait. Photo opportunities are great here too, as although it's busy, the huge Christmas tree is such a gorgeous sight!
Next up is dinner! We went to an incredibly American, very 'local' diner near our hotel (though I have forgotten the name!) and it was delicious. I'd recommend trying places that are not popularised on TikTok or Instagram, as those are likely to be incredibly busy unless pre-booked. We regretted not pre-booking a lot of our meals since this is such an incredibly busy period, and I would recommend doing so for better meal experiences!
We ended our day here, as we had to pack and were exhausted from walking around so much!
Day 5: Last-Minute Adventures and Departure
For the final day in New York, make the most of the day until your flight! We booked evening flights to ensure that we maximised our time in the city. We started with breakfast near Brooklyn, grabbing a croissant and coffee at a local cafe to fuel up. Coffee in NYC was actually very good and affordable, plus being quite strong! Brooklyn is so pretty in the mornings as it's typically less busy and just so picturesque. It definitely felt more relaxed in comparison to Midtown, something I felt was needed after such a busy few days.
After breakfast, we hopped on the subway and made our way to the Brooklyn Bridge. Walking across the bridge was one of those classic NYC experiences that really lived up to the hype! I wish we'd gone for sunset or sunrise as I can imagine that would be gorgeous. Definitely make the effort if you can! The views of the skyline were absolutely stunning, and it’s such a nice way to soak up the city one last time. We took our time strolling across and, of course, snapped plenty of photos along the way.

Once we crossed over, we wandered through DUMBO, which is such a charming area with cobblestone streets and that iconic view of the Manhattan Bridge framed between the buildings. It’s a perfect photo spot, so definitely make sure to stop here if you have the time. We had the place mostly to ourselves so there was no stress about rushing for photos or anything.
For lunch, we made our way over to Chinatown, but it was so busy when we arrived that we couldn’t find a spot to sit. If you’re visiting during peak hours, I’d recommend either making a reservation or arriving a little earlier to avoid the crowds. In the end, we decided to head back to our hotel to pack up and relax before our flight.
To end our trip on a high note, we went to a rooftop bar for some drinks and one final look at the city. It was the perfect way to soak up the scenery and atmosphere before saying goodbye! Watching the sunset with the skyline in the background honestly felt like such a full-circle moment and was the best way to wrap up an incredible trip.
As your trip comes to a close, set aside some time for souvenir shopping. Whether you opt for a classic New York t-shirt or a magnet, it's nice to bring something back to remember the trip by! I collect keyrings, so a 'New York' keyring with a big apple was essential.
Finally, head back to JFK for your flight home. The tube is quick and easy, or opt for a taxi if you're by yourself, as evenings on the subway can be a little dodgy! New York City has a unique way of capturing your heart, and I was devastated to be leaving!
Final Thoughts
A 5-day journey through New York City is filled with excitement and a strange sense of nostalgia even though you've never visited before! I had read that the city offers something for everyone, which I didn't believe before I went, but now I know that this is true. I felt at home after five days, and I wish I could have stayed longer. I can't wait to return one Christmas, and I'll have to visit again in the summer! I'll be making excuses to go every season just to experience the city again.
Following this itinerary will help you maximise your time in New York, allowing you to enjoy iconic landmarks while also not spreading yourselves too thin. Enjoy every moment, and don’t forget to take lots of photos to capture your adventure, like I did!
