A Brief 1-Night, 2-Day Venice Adventure: An Itinerary!
Venice! The floating city that captures the heart of every traveller with its intricate canals and gorgeous architecture. If you only have 1 night and 2 days to explore this magical destination, don't worry! I've crafted an engaging itinerary that will help you discover hidden gems while soaking in the most iconic sights. It might feel rushed, but you'll get to see everything exciting and important in Venice!
Day 1: Arrival and Evening Exploration
Strolling Through the Small Alleys
Embrace the city's true culture by getting lost in its labyrinth of narrow alleys. While wandering through these small streets, keep your eyes peeled for charming cafés, unique boutiques, and cool cultural insights everywhere you go! The aroma of fresh pasta fills the air, mingling with the sound of gondoliers singing to their passengers, creating a truly immersive experience. It's worth it to just stand still for a bit and people-watch on the bridges!
This whole area is less touristy, allowing for an authentic Venetian encounter. For example, one cute café called Caffè del Doge, located just off the beaten path near Ponte de Rialto, serves some of the best espresso/coffee in town, making it a must-visit for coffee lovers (like me!).
Visiting Piazza San Marco
After your leisurely wandering, head to the iconic Piazza San Marco, the heart of Venice. Here, you'll find the stunning Basilica di San Marco, renowned for its opulent architecture and dazzling mosaics. They're absolutely amazing to look at, and I would definitely recommend this! The square is bustling with energy (and tourists!) and is filled with musicians creating a lively atmosphere.
Settle down at one of the outdoor cafés and enjoy a quick Aperol Spritz while people-watching. It is expensive at these places, but worth it for the once-in-a-while trip!
A Visit to the Libreria Acqua Alta
Next, venture to the quirky Libreria Acqua Alta. This charming bookshop is unlike any other, filled with stacks of books, gondolas, and even bathtubs! It’s a student and book lover’s paradise! The delightful chaos of this unique bookshop gives it a treasure-hunt vibe, and I absolutely loved spending time here! We even saw the cutest cat, and the owners were lovely!
As you explore, don't miss the scenic staircase made of old books, just out the back! This obviously gets very busy, but it's so worth the wait! Climb to the top for a panoramic view of the canal – it's a perfect snapshot for your travelling memories and for a cute Insta post!
Night time at the Ponte di Rialto
As you head into the evening, go towards the Ponte di Rialto, one of Venice’s most famous landmarks. The bridge, which is illuminated at night, offers a stunning view of the Grand Canal. I really was speechless when I first saw it at night, and if you get there for sunset, it's super busy, but you can usually get a spot near the front for photos and just to embrace it!
Stroll across the bridge, taking in the views of gondolas gliding through the water (there are so many!). Don’t forget your camera – this sight is unforgettable and just absolutely gorgeous!
Dinner with a View
Cap off your first night with dinner at a riverside restaurant. While it may be a tourist spot, the experience is worth it and we spent a fortune! But the views were unbeatable; if you have the funds for it, there's a reason they're 'touristy'. Enjoy fresh seafood pasta, perhaps a local speciality like spaghetti alle vongole (spaghetti with clams), as you gaze out over the canal. The ambiance is magical, and the food delightful – it’s an ideal ending to your first day in Venice. I had carbonara for my first meal, and it was delicious! The staff are obviously super friendly everywhere you go, and it's really an amazing experience!
Day 2: A Day of Art
Early Morning Boat Ride to Murano/Burano
We got up very early, and I would recommend you do too! Set sail for Murano, the nearby island renowned for its glass-making. Hop on a vaporetto (water bus) and enjoy the scenic views of the canals for a 30-minute ride to this picturesque island. Morning waters make for a calm and serene journey. The boat stop is easy to navigate on Google Maps, and the tickets are usually bought at the ticket office.
Watching Glass Blowers
Once you arrive in Murano, visit a well-known glass-blowing factory. Their craftsmanship may leave you in awe, and you might feel inspired to bring a piece of Murano artistry home with you. It's really a cool experience, and we enjoyed a tour of the factory! They will try to persuade you to buy Murano art from their factory for astronomical prices, but I would recommend going onto the streets to find something cheaper.
Capture action shots of the glassblowers as they work, showcasing the intricate designs that highlight Murano’s global reputation for glassmaking. I recorded a lot, and our experience included front-row seats!
Visiting the biennial Venice Biennale (architecture/art)
After the glass-blowing adventure, wander the charming streets of Murano and visit a few art galleries. These local galleries often showcase the work of nearby artists, giving you a taste of the vibrant art scene Venice is famous for. Hop on a boat when you're finished, but just keep an eye out for the times of them returning!
Make sure you get off at the Venice Biennale. We went at the time of the architecture showcase and would love to go back for the art! This showcase presents art from a huge number of countries, each having their own area to present their exhibition. For the architecture, unique structures & products were absolutely everywhere. Tickets aren't that expensive and you can buy them at the door. We went late afternoon so we only had an hour or so before it closed, meaning it was certainly less busy but we did have to rush around a little bit.
The Bridge of Sighs
Once back in Venice, make your way to the historic Bridge of Sighs. This iconic structure connects the Doge's Palace to the prison. It’s said that prisoners would sigh as they took one last glance at freedom before crossing the bridge, hence the name! A local actually told us this story, which was super fascinating and so interesting to learn. This is the best spot for a cute sunset photo!
Climbing the Bell Tower at Sunset
Now it’s time for one of the most breathtaking views in Venice! Head to the famous Campanile di San Marco (Bell Tower of St Mark) and make your way to the top for a stunning panorama of the city at sunset. The sight of the sun dipping below the horizon, casting golden rays over the canals and rooftops, is an amazing memory that I don't think I'll ever forget! The views were absolutely stunning, although I am afraid of heights, which put a little dampener on it. It is jam-packed up there at this time, so just keep that in mind.
All in all, it's an amazing city, and I would have loved to stay there longer - but this is the perfect guide for those (like me) who had to be quick at exploring the city!
